Dog Travel: Car Safety
Good, Better, Best options for car safety when traveling with your dog! Any time you travel with your dog there is a chance of an accident and even a fender bender with your dog in the car can turn into tragedy. Dogs do not have the ability to process as fast as humans and in an accident they will react before thinking (okay some humans are the same).
There was a fender bender on the highway a decade ago in my town and the owner had their beloved dog in the backseat with the windows down. When they got hit the dog jumped out the window and took off. The owner was devastated and all over the news looking for their dog. This has stuck with me all this time. That pain can be avoided!
Good Option: Dog Seatbelt
A seatbelt for dogs with a good harness is a great, easy first step and my personal choice. The harness needs to have a good chest plate that will minimize the pressure points. Collars are a deadly option for attaching the seatbelt because it will put all the body weight on their neck in a wreck. You need something that spreads out the tension across the chest. Attach the seatbelt to the lowest harness point on their back for the best safety.
Better Option: Soft Crate
A crate will keep your dog secure in a wreck. Soft crates are okay for that point but lack the ability to protect the dog in a big wreck. They contain the dog so less likely you will be a distracted driver and the smaller area can give an anxious dog safe walls for feeling more secure.
Best Option: Hard Sided Crate
There are some very high end options for crates and I do believe you get what you pay for on these. A hard crate is the safest option because in a wreck they can protect your dog. I spoke with a lady once who had been in a roll over accident and her dogs were found next to her car still safe in their crates. Only minor bumps and bruises. That’s ideal! It also keeps emergency responders safer because a scared dog can become aggressive and aggressive dog.
The choice of product depends on you, your dog, and your lifestyle. These are my top 3 options, so you and your puppy can get on the road and enjoying life together!
