The Sane Dog Boarder

Dog boarding isn’t for everyone! Many of my friends and family are often heard saying “I don’t know how you do it” or “is she crazy”. I have 10 dogs living in my home on constant rotation, I can definitely see where that’s not normal!

There are definitely items I have learned that help! Putting them in order is the hard part. Which is most important, who knows, but let’s go over the items I can’t live without!

I can’t emphasize how hard it was to decide where to start :)

Alexa is my bestie! Without Alexa and the timers I’d be lost! I set timers for everything. Dog meds! Turn off the water! Remind me to… I even ask Alexa to turn on Calming Dog Music in the middle of the night when the dogs are restless! There’s no end to what I’ve asked Alexa to do! Seriously Alexa is a lifesaver!

Next is my earbuds! With the dog barking in a small entryway every time someone comes to the door I was worried I’d lose my hearing. I have a earbud for every occasion! For answering the front door it’s my AirPod Pro 3. They allow me to hear the owners without the damage from the dog barking. For sleep it’s my Loops to dampen the noise (I’m a very light sleeper). They’re much more comfortable for sleeping. I interchange both for the yard work that comes with dog boarding.

For the days when the barking gets to be too much they make anti-bark devices that emit a noise only dogs can hear that teaches them to not bark. Much more humane than a bark collar that’s going to go off every time any dog in the pack barks. This is a great alternative. I do ask that you watch your pack and see how they react. My border collie hated it so much he wouldn’t come in the house when it was on so I didn’t use it while he was alive.

Then there is the dog hair. I didn’t mt know how you feel about being covered in dog hair but it’s definitely not my thing. I cannot have dog hair everywhere. Makes no sense when I’ve told you that I board dogs, in my home, for a living, but it’s the truth. To keep it under control I rely on my cordless vacuum. I can’t afford a Dyson so I started with the Levoit vacuum to ensure I’d use it often enough to have a reason for an expensive machine one before I spent that kind of money. I’ve loved this thing! So easy to empty the dirt that I don’t care if it only holds a little. Long enough battery life to get all the dirt up then back on the charger it goes. Lightweight, easy, and always does the job. It’s a lifesaver!

Stainless steel bowls are super important for hygienic dog homes! Wood and plastic can allow bacteria to grow where stainless steel will not and they stand up to hundreds of washes on the hot cycle of the dishwasher! I love the non-slip bottoms to keep your dog from having to chase it around the kitchen trying to get their food.

Lysol Laundry Sanitizer makes my home so much cleaner! The amount of towels and dog beds I wash on a daily basis is ridiculous. So much dog pee and dog’s constantly marking things. This sanitizer makes me feel so much better about the towels being reused over and over. I also love the Bounce Pet Hair Sheets! Not only does it only take one but they truly get the dog hair off my clothing. I’ve tried wool balls, those sticky balls, pretty much every product to remove dog hair and the only one I trust is Bounce dryer sheets for pets.

Living in a dog house means I WILL NOT walk around barefoot ever. Whether it’s stepping on the random acorn a dog has brought in or accidentally finding a wet spot I didn’t see I’m simply not doing it! I live in my Birkenstock inside and out. For summer it’s the Birkenstock Eva and in winter they make a great slipper!

I’m certain there are a million other items I cannot live without and I’ll update this as I think of them!
