First Time Boarding

Boarding your dog for the first time is scary! It all starts with picking the right place for your dog. The number of questions that run through your mind can make you feel crazy and overprotective but you’re not, you are a good pet parent making an important decision! Things to consider:
Do they get along with other dogs?
Do they need special attention and care?
Will they get enough exercise?
Will they get too much?
Can they jump fences?
Is the place licensed and insured?
Are their extra charges for meds and treats?
So many questions and such an important decision! I always recommend first a meet and greet to ensure you know where your dog will be staying and that they will be safe and comfortable. I also HIGHLY recommend overnight or two to ensure your dog knows you’re coming back for them.
Meet and greets allow the boarding facility to gauge how your dog is with other dogs and give you a moment to ask your questions. It’s also the perfect time to make certain you feel comfortable with the person you are leaving your dog with and vice versa.
Once you’ve picked your perfect place it’s time to pack up your pup for their first stay! So what do you pack?
Prepare your food in a sealed container or put individual servings in ziplock bags! You don’t want food spoiling or other dogs getting into it while you’re away and some states have regulations on this! Below are three links to help with this!
A tag with the dog’s name, your name and phone number on it is a safe option that won’t get stuck on things but would identify your dog in an emergency!
If you’re bringing your dog’s bed I recommend a waterproof cover. Dogs love to mark their favorite items and this will ensure you do not go home with a bed full of pee. Below are two options I have on all of my dog beds!
I’m a major believer in the AirTag just as an extra precaution! Honestly if it makes me feel more secure in knowing where my dog is, why wouldn’t I do it?
If your dog is on medication never prepackaged your pill pockets. They smell too good to other dogs and accidents can happen in a second. I highly recommend a pill organizer like this one below in the links so the medicine is safe and the person giving it can easily see if today’s medication was administered! Packing a bag on pill pockets they can use is also a nice touch and be sure to communicate at drop off that the medicine is in your bag so they can store it away immediately!
I’m certain there are a million other things I’m forgetting but these are the major ones. Hopefully this helps ease some of the stress of first time boarding and allows you to relax and enjoy your vacation knowing Fido is well taken care of!
